It's not funny, not at all, but she huffs out a soft laugh at that anyway. April is not an optimist by nature and she's already begun to entertain the possibility that Les might not come back at all. She's begun to think about what she might have to do to get out of town.

She won't say any of that to Caden, though. All she does is laugh and nod and leans against him. And thinks about how long she needs to wait before leaving town.

"There's nothing we can do but wait," she says after a long silence. "Is there?"
