As soon as the words leave Caden's mouth he knew that it was a stupid thing to say. Of course what April needs most is the one thing Caden can't give her. She just wants Les back, and Caden can't blame her. She's gracious enough not to point out his blunder, but he still feels bad for it.

He doesn't think he's ever felt so helpless in his entire life. In fact, he knows he hasn't. He has no idea how to help Les, and he doesn't know how to make April feel better. The man she wants isn't the one standing in front of her, and Caden is at a complete and total loss.

Her hands are cool and small in his own and he lets them go because she doesn't seem to need the touch and he doesn't want to crowd her. He wants to hold her, but he'd rather let her take the lead on this, on how they act around each other. If all she wants right now is a friend, he can be that.

"I don't know either," he admits, lowering his gaze. He takes a deep breath and squares his shoulders. "Why don't you go sit down and I'll make us some coffee."

That he can do, at least. And it looks like they're going to have a long night in front of them.
